rachel trying to be senegalese with the seeds we collected. should mention that all of this was a part of a reforestation project. we were taking the seeds to an area that had been wiped out for one reason or another. mangroves' main importance stems from their ability to create new land--an ever-valuable resource. the "island" where we are collecting seeds in this photo, in fact, consists entirely of mangroves.

little village north of the gambia.
mid september 2006. we went there to camp out with some university students that lived near the village, and to experience some of the "cultural traditions" that senegal is known for: lutte (form of wrestling), the mangroves, clearing fields while running from the concuran, etc. all in all, it was a very educational four days. and man, did we eat a lot.
