At this point, it is about midnight and we have just realized that we are hopelessly lost after wandering around the most dangerous lava field on the island for several hours in the dark. Actually, we knew exactly where we were. Right next to the kipuka (island of trees in a field of lava rock) we had just circled without realizing it. Fog was not our friend. I insisted we pose for a photo before curling up on the extremely comfortable a'a lava (that's the sharp poky kind) to sleep.

I've always thought it was funny how they call it the Big Island, as though they can't quite remember what its real name it (you know, the kid with the blue hair). But, this is a sampling of the things I did/saw on the weekends.
