Stephen, wine, and sweet corn 2
Stephen still has the ear of sweetcorn that my grandfather gave him when he visited the farm in Kansas in the 70's. No, that's not it - that's a sadly deformed specimen from the local Whiterose. (Isn't that a much nicer name for a grocery store than "HyVee"?)

My mother got in touch with old friends of the family near London less than a week before I was to depart the country; they offered to host me and did a bang-up job of it. The use of a dark, quiet bedroom, after a late night of paper-writing, by itself would have made the trip worthwhile.
But no! They put on a feast for me, showed me London (bus tour, St. Paul's, "The Producers"), and allowed me to relax in their home for a whole weekend before my transatlantic journey.
