The Messenger comes in to deliver the good and bad news. Troy was destroyed, then a chunk of the fleet was lost in a storm. In my head I thought of him as an 'aviation trooper' or 'airship commander'... so the band across his chest is supposed to hold various ropes and hooks (in case he has to climb the rigging inside the ship).

The Messenger arrives to tell everyone what happened to the fleet and how Troy fell. His narrative will be told as a series of flashbacks. The soldiers are described as standing around in the text.
